She was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in McHenry, a suburb of the city. She grew up in a single-parent household with an older sister who suffered from schizophrenia. Her youth was marked by personal challenges, including periods of substance abuse and time spent in a youth center, though she graduated high school early and was an active cheerleader.
